Quite some time ago I and my family located\u00a0 in Miami<\/p>\n
in order to sell a boat in our possession, in fact we lived<\/p>\n
aboard it. We found residence in a finger[on the map] of<\/p>\n
the City of Miami nestled between Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.<\/p>\n
We were informed that come that September our youngest child<\/p>\n
would be enrolled in and bussed to a school in what was known<\/p>\n
then as the Black Grove on the South side[shades of the South side]<\/p>\n
of Coconut Grove. Humm, okay.<\/p>\n
After one week of coming home with no schoolwork<\/p>\n
I instructed him to query that. Turns out that children<\/p>\n
could not bring home their day to day efforts\u00a0 until<\/p>\n
end of school year. What the fuck! Humm, okay.<\/p>\n
We met with the teacher of our son, who incidentally was the<\/p>\n
only white child in her class. Afterward, my wife and I stood<\/p>\n
on the sidewalk of\u00a0Grand\u00a0Avenue\u00a0and looked at each other;<\/p>\n
the thought came to me, yes, society needs its garbagemen<\/p>\n
and dishwashers[no disrespect, I have\u00a0been both], what<\/p>\n
better place to prepare them than in the schools.<\/p>\n
Sure enough our son brought home his efforts<\/p>\n
at end of term and we spent two nights poring over them.<\/p>\n
What can I say, I’ll say this, we sold the boat and made<\/p>\n
the great escape to the South. Within two or three days<\/p>\n
of our son’s enrollment in an island school we received<\/p>\n
a summons from his home room teacher. We knew what<\/p>\n
to expect. The first words out of her mouth were “where<\/p>\n
has this child been for the past year”?<\/p>\n
After accepting our explanation\u00a0 she said<\/p>\n
“okay, he will immediately be placed into remedial everything”.<\/p>\n
