On the eleventh of July, 1789, La Fayette, yes that La Fayette<\/p>\n
gave an address to the French National Assembly of which he<\/p>\n
was a member. It concerned the rights of man.<\/p>\n
In it he made the comment “call to mind the sentiments which<\/p>\n
nature has engraved jn the heart of every citizen, and which take<\/p>\n
a new force when they are solemnly recognized by all.<\/p>\n
For a nation to love liberty, it is sufficient that she knows it;<\/p>\n
and to be free, it is sufficient that she wills it”.<\/p>\n
Three days later the citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille,<\/p>\n
a fortress\u00a0 heavily defended by government troops employing<\/p>\n
weaponry of the day. Armed primarily with pitchforks, pots and<\/p>\n
pans, and against all odds these people triumphed and essentially<\/p>\n
toppled a hopelessly corrupt government.<\/p>\n
