“Iron<\/em> Hawk continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I did not see much more. I saw Brings Plenty kill a soldier with a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

war club. I saw Red Horn Buffalo fall. There was a Lakota riding<\/p>\n\n\n\n

along the edge of the gulch, and he was yelling to look out, that <\/p>\n\n\n\n

there was a soldier hiding in there. I saw him charge in and kill<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the soldier and begin slashing him with a knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we began to go towards the river, and the dust was lifting<\/p>\n\n\n\n

so that we could see the women and children coming over to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

us from across the river. The soldiers were all rubbed out there <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and scattered around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women swarmed up the hill and began stripping the soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were yelling and laughing and singing now. I saw <\/p>\n\n\n\n

something funny . Two fat old women were stripping a soldier,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who was wounded and playing dead. When they had him naked,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they began cutting off something he had, and he jumped up<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and began fighting with the two fat women. He was swinging<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one of them around, while the other was trying to stab him with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her knife. After awhile, another woman rushed up and shoved<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her knife into him and he died really dead. It was funny<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to see the naked Wasichu fighting with the fat women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now we could see our warriors were all charging on some<\/p>\n\n\n\n

soldiers that had come from the hill up river to help the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

second band that we had rubbed out. They ran back and we<\/p>\n\n\n\n

followed, chasing them up on their hill again where they had their<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pack mules. We could not hurt them much there, because they<\/p>\n\n\n\n

had been digging to hide themselves and they were lying behind<\/p>\n\n\n\n

saddles and other things. I was down by the river and I saw some<\/p>\n\n\n\n

soldiers come down there with buckets. They had no guns, just<\/p>\n\n\n\n

buckets. Some boys were down there, and they came out of the brush<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and threw mud and rocks in the soldiers faces and chased<\/p>\n\n\n\n

them into the river. I guess they got enough to drink, for they<\/p>\n\n\n\n

are drinking yet. We killed them in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a while it was nearly sundown, and I went home with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

many others to eat, while some others stayed to watch the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

soldiers on the hill. I hadn’t eaten all day, because the trouble<\/p>\n\n\n\n

started just when I was beginning to eat my first meal.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
