But Donne lived in an age, in a country where either the king or the church could have your head for verboten language. And he knew it, surely he was aware of Socrates&#8217; fate. In a way, like Plato before him, &#8220;The Republic&#8221; is a good example, he wrote in a manner that requires you to read between the lines to get his drift.
