I’ve just finished reading Philip Roth’s novel “Portnoy’s Complaint”. The jacket’s color is “in your face yellow” I could be wrong, but I soon had the feeling that the book had never been read. How so?, you say; occasionaly as I read I was forced to separate two pages.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0As you know I sometime quote passages from books that I have read. Not so with Philip Roth. His novel is a tour-de force cover to cover, and “no way” would I take him out of context.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 You could consider his prose a send-up of Jewish people, if so, a loving one.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I thought as I read, “how would Jews at that time and place take his spiel?.\u00a0 My guess is that they would have laughed harder than I was now. The book is also a history of the time and places he described. You learn as you laugh. Personally, I laughed my ass off, ha,ha!\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Islander.<\/p>\n
