from the earth, or the bursting forth of volcanic fires,<\/p>\n
with spontaneous, original native force.<\/p>\n
The graces taught in the schools, the costly ornaments<\/p>\n
and studied\u00a0contrivances of speech, shock and disgust men,<\/p>\n
when their own lives and the fate of their wives,<\/p>\n
their children, and\u00a0their country hang on the decision<\/p>\n
of the hour. Then words have lost their power, rhetoric<\/p>\n
is vain and all elaborate oratory contemptible.<\/p>\n
Even genius itself then feels rebuked and subdued,<\/p>\n
as in the presence of higher qualities.<\/p>\n
Then patriotism is eloquent; then self devotion is eloquent.<\/p>\n
The clear conception, outrunning the deduction of logic,<\/p>\n
the high purpose, the firm resolve, the dauntless spirit,<\/p>\n
speaking on the tongue, beaming from the eye,<\/p>\n
informing every feature, and urging the whole man onward,<\/p>\n
right onward to his object,- this, this\u00a0is eloquence; or rather<\/p>\n
it is something greater and higher than all eloquence,-<\/p>\n
