“From start to finish I found no strangers. If I had, I<\/p>\n\n\n\n
might be able to report them more objectively. But<\/p>\n\n\n\n
these are my people and this is my country. If I found<\/p>\n\n\n\n
matters to criticize and to deplore, they were tenden-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
cies equally present in myself. If I were to prepare one<\/p>\n\n\n\n
immaculately inspected generality it would be this: For<\/p>\n\n\n\n
all of our enormous geographic range, for all of our<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sectionalism, for all of our interwoven breeds drawn<\/p>\n\n\n\n
from every part of the ethnic world, we are a nation, a<\/p>\n\n\n\n
new breed. Americans are much more American than<\/p>\n\n\n\n
they are Northerners, Southerners, Westerners, or<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Easterners. And descendants of English, Irish, Italian,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jewish, German, Polish are essentially American. This<\/p>\n\n\n\n
is not patriotic whoop-de-do; it is carefully observed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
fact. California Chinese, Boston Irish, Wisconsin Ger-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
man, yes, and Alabama Negroes, have more in com-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
mon than they have apart.And this is the more re-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
markable because it has happened so quickly. It is a<\/p>\n\n\n\n
fact that Americans from all sections and of all racial<\/p>\n\n\n\n
extractions are more alike than the Welsh are like the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
English, the Lancashireman like the Cockney, or for<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that matter the Lowland Scot like the Highlander. It is<\/p>\n\n\n\n
astonishing that this has happened in less than two<\/p>\n\n\n\n
hundred years and most of it in the last fifty. The<\/p>\n\n\n\n
American identity is an exact and provable thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
