Some musical compositions stir my mind,
some stir my blood, for instance the skirl of bagpipes, probably ancestry.
Dvorschak’s Ninth Symphony stirs my mind
and my blood and I wonder what it must have
been like to be Americans in Carnegie Hall on
a December night in 1893 listening to it for the
first time? At that time it bore no title.
Surely by the end of the second movement they
knew it was about the “New World” or, if you
like, them.
Can you imagine what they thought one hundred
and twenty-four years ago, can you feel what they
must have felt? I can.
