Philip Roth

I’ve just finished reading Philip Roth’s novel “Portnoy’s Complaint”. It was published in 1967, however, I never got around to reading it.                                                                                                                                                               Recently, I came across a 1969 edition published by RANDOM HOUSE, NEW YORK, at a yard sale. The jacket’s color is “in your face yellow” I could be wrong, but I soon had the feeling that the book had never been read. How so?, you say; occasionaly as I read I was forced to separate two pages.                                         As you know I sometime quote passages from books that I have read. Not so with Philip Roth. His novel is a tour-de force cover to cover, and “no way” would I take him out of context.                                                          You could consider his prose a send-up of Jewish people, if so, a loving one.                                                                 I thought as I read, “how would Jews at that time and place take his spiel?.  My guess is that they would have laughed harder than I was now. The book is also a history of the time and places he described. You learn as you laugh. Personally, I laughed my ass off, ha,ha!                        Islander.
