Webster’s def. “Monument. n. [L. from moneo, to remind, to warn.]
Anything by which the memory of a person, period, or event is
perpetuated; a memorial, esp. something built or erected in memory
of events, actions, or persons;”
I take exception to the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee
in Richmond, Virginia.
They say it is a symbol of slavery, I disagree. I see it as a symbol of the Civil
War in which over six hundred thousand Americans died, in a nation of
thirty-one million. You do the math.
I see it as a symbol of extraordinary bravery and monumental anguish on
both sides, a symbol of all that was at that time, never to be forgotten.
May I remind you that both Washington and Jefferson were slaveholders
and that slavery was an institution in this country long before any
of the three mentioned above came on the scene.
Would you change the name of Washington, DC. and take down his
monument or tear up The Declaration of Independence?
