It’s the height of the Depression back in the thirties and this down
and out fellow is sitting on a curb in Kansas City. The wind is up and
comes a sheet of newspaper tumbling down the street. Turns out it’s
the classified section of The New York Times but he reads it anyway.
In it he sees this add, “Lost, shaggy dog, if found please return
to no. 10 Belvedere Place, Mayfair, London. Handsome reward”.
Moments later he looks up and lo and behold, here comes a shaggy dog
wandering down the street. He jumps up, collars the dog, hails
a taxi and goes to the railroad station. There he takes a train to NYC. with
the dog in tow. When he gets to NYC., he takes a taxi to the docks and
boards a liner bound for Southhampton, England. Upon arrival, he
takes the boat-train up to London, hails a taxi and gives the driver
the address in Mayfair. When he gets to the house he grabs the dog,
runs up the steps and rings the bell. A rather elegant lady opens
the door and excitedly he says, “lady, I’ve found your dog lady,
this is your dog lady, right?”
She glances at the dog, turns to him and exclaims,
“good heavens no!, it wasn’t that shaggy”.
