Every once in a while a few hundred people show up claiming they are
the ninety-nine percent. Last time I did my math which was just now,
ninety-nine percent of the American population works out to around
two hundred and ninety-seven million people.
I get the point these protesters are trying to make but surely the
country at large does not, at least not yet. I’m quite fond of analogies
and perhaps the following is one, you tell me.
As demonstrated, any average size police force can quell a few hundred
unarmed demonstrators, stun guns, stun grenades, flashbang grenades,
tear gas, water cannons, mace in the face, not to forget the trusty
truncheon. Ninety-nine percent indeed.
Gandhi led a non-violent movement, but when he confronted Government
he had not hundreds but thousands at his back.
The British had no choice, to engage in slaughter would overnight
bring tens of millions down on them and they had not that much ammunition
nor chance of re-supply, they would have been lucky if they had only
wound up in “the black hole of Calcutta”.
No, only when the ninety-nine percent is the ninety-nine percent.
