On the eleventh of July, 1789, La Fayette, yes that La Fayette
gave an address to the French National Assembly of which he
was a member. It concerned the rights of man.
In it he made the comment “call to mind the sentiments which
nature has engraved jn the heart of every citizen, and which take
a new force when they are solemnly recognized by all.
For a nation to love liberty, it is sufficient that she knows it;
and to be free, it is sufficient that she wills it”.
Three days later the citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille,
a fortress heavily defended by government troops employing
weaponry of the day. Armed primarily with pitchforks, pots and
pans, and against all odds these people triumphed and essentially
toppled a hopelessly corrupt government.
