It stands alone without the addition of the last movement.
And yet it is the last movement that brings me to pen.
The stark mood swing between the last movement and the
rest of the symphony makes me think it is a codicil, but why?
Had he found out he had a terminal illness or did he come to the
conclusion that he had no more to offer?, both are powerful reasons
to call it off. You may know, and you most certainly do know
if you read me, that he died within days after conducting it for the first time.
